Week 12: Giles Party
This was just a random house party one of our friends put together way off campus, but it really turned into a ridiculous time. I understand that watching movies like these are probably not as entertaining if you don’t know the people being filmed, but I hope most college aged kids can appreciate the special feeling of parties such as these. Take us backkkkkkkk.
Happy New Year Everyone! Been away for a bit, but will be posting again until all of our best is online once more.
Week 11: Year One Montage
While this is more of a glorified slideshow than an actual video, I think this is one of my favorites. The choice of the Verve Pipe song in the second half of the montage is a little cliche, but it fits perfectly so who really cares. For a while we were posting pictures on VTsFinest at least once or twice a week, and this was a collection of some of our favorites from the entire freshman year. Obviously something like this has more of a value to us than to outside viewers, but I think its a great good representation of the crazieness that is freshman year @ college that most everyone experiences in one way or another.

Week 9: Operation Pink
This was the kind of stuff we would typically do if we had too much free time. After watching this for the first time in a few years, I just realized how ridiculous his reaction was when he returns to the room. It may seem like a total set up, but this kid’s room really was painted pink 100% without his knowledge. He seems to just be realllllly bad at acting genuine. The paint job is supreme (apologies on the temporarily inappropriate slur). I think if nothing else, they should all be applauded for seeing this through to the extent they did. Most of the pranks I remember doing lost steam if we had to do more than 5 minutes work.
Digging through all the old backups of VT’sFinest has had me feeling like Indiana Jones lately. This was our logo for most of the site’s college-year existence. I still love it.
VT'sFinest Article Excerpt
“So embrace your days at school, deal with the fact that you will have work, and get it done. I really don’t care if you have a 20 page paper to write, or if you think your professor is an unfair asshole. Each night (or early morning ;P) you go to bed, if you ever regret being at college even just for that one day, remind yourself that you should be happy and proud of where you are in life. For when you are older and you are sitting at your desk or wherever you end up, you will look back on college as a whole not by each individual day. The bad days are forgotten and the good ones are remembered (most of them!) and thus is the key to living a great college life. At least I think…it really might not be a good idea to trust my judgment as I DID lipsync on video to a song about breakfast cereals.” From the ‘04 VT’sFinest article Get Your Ass Back to School
Week 8: A Night With Jack Daniels
So many things to say about this one, but really the facial expressions @ 5:10 on are worth the viewing alone. Not sure if this video is advertising alcohol or advocating abstinence from it, but I think a sound argument can be made for either. Definitely something to save for the kids in 25 years or so.
Week 7: This Is VT’sFinest Commercial Spot #1
Having always been a fan of Sportscenter and their hilarious commercials, we were inspired to make our own as an ode to their genius. I really think the premise is great, with just a few negatives on the technical side of it (crappy sound, shooting subjects with the camera facing the light, etc.), but I am really proud of the originality and great use of what video editing tools we had. I’ll post the blooper reel later which to this day still makes me LOL. My favorite part is towards the end when Powell is talking to himself and has an Oscar-worthy emotional performance. Also, the music choice (Girl from Ipanema), really does the trick.
Week 6: Boyz In The Hood
We made this lipsyncer a few weeks after Milk & Cereal while sitting at my desk with my webcam. We lack any real props (not that you can call cereal bowls and gallons of milk props), but I still find it fascinating how entertaining lipsyncing could be. I don’t remember either one of us ever having to memorize the lyrics, so I guess Boyz In The Hood is one of those songs you just seem to know. Watching it over again, I think the mere fact that I am posting this video is a good indicator of my sheer lack of public embarrassment consciousness.
Week 5: A Typical VT Night
This video is so ridiculous. I am not sure if it is the crazy intense music or the wild expressions on everyone’s faces, but watching this is an experience every time. I am a big advocate for people randomly filming nights out with their friends, and this video is definitely a testament to that. I remember it somehow being a big deal (in a good way) to everyone that we brought a camera along, and for some of us, it was a helpful way to remember the next morning why we had bruises on our elbows and rug burns on our legs.
Week 4: Geology Class
This video really doesn’t need a whole lot of introduction. All of the videos from VT’sFinest get me feeling nostalgic, but I would have to say this is one of the few videos that still really makes me laugh. Public embarrassment is always such a great form of entertainment, especially when you have someone like Crazy Mark involved. I wish we had someone taping at the front to get a different angle, and more importantly, to film the reactions of the students in this class, but when you are shooting something guerrilla style you have to take what you can get!
Week 3: Room Party
This video was one of those silly and spontaneous things we threw together that ended up becoming something really memorable to us. We had a few friends together in a dorm room with a beer pong table and alcohol and not much else, and that was the perfect recipe for a good time. Something I have noticed about looking back on these videos is that our production values were nonexistent (especially compared to what people are putting together these days online), but the simple mash ups of video and music are like a moving scrapbook of a time when the biggest thing we had to worry about was how we were going to get beer and bring it back to our dorms on a random college night.
